Description of the Environmental Management System
CARGILL SLU, at its Barcelona work centre, has held ISO 14001 Certification since 1998, and has voluntarily adhered to the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) since 1999, in accordance with EC Regulation 1221/2009, with registration number E-CAT-S-000013. The scope of the Environmental Management System covers the activities of "production of flour and crude oil from soya beans" carried out in the work centre that Cargill has in Barcelona at Calle Muelle Alvarez de la Campa, S/N (08039). It is not foreseen that any other work centre of CARGILL SLU in Spain will join the EMAS register. On an annual basis, and as established by the ISO 14001 standard, an audit is carried out by a certifying body in order to evaluate the Management System, and to detect deviations in order to take actions to improve the environmental performance of the organisation. As a highlight of the commitment to continuous improvement and pollution prevention set out in the Centre's policy, Cargill developed an extraordinary plan at the end of the 1990s to reduce dust emissions to minimum levels well below those that exist in this type of industry worldwide. This emission prevention control plan, once developed and implemented, achieved excellent results and was recognised internally by the company worldwide, with the plant receiving the "Achievers Recognition Award". This is a prestigious award given by CARGILL in which all Cargill plants in all divisions around the world compete and in which the technical improvements used are rewarded. Furthermore, these minimisation processes were approved by the Barcelona City Council Authorities. CARGILL SLU currently has Environmental Authorisation reference B1CS160151 of 2019. The plant renewed its concession with the Port in February 2016 for the next 20 years, thus ensuring its activity in the Port of Barcelona with the implementation of several projects to improve the facilities and their operation.

CARGILL SLU, as required by law, submits the results of the self-monitoring of wastewater on an annual basis to the DCO. The results with respect to the limit established by the Metropolitan Wastewater Regulation (RMAAR): In the inspection carried out on 23-09-2019 by the AMB, at the wastewater discharge point located in the company's car park, the sulphide parameter exceeded the limits set by the Metropolitan Wastewater Discharge Regulation. This specific analysis generated the corresponding file SN2019000497, which ended with corrective actions to find out the causes and prevent this parameter from being exceeded. During 2020, the sulphide and chloride values were exceeded, and a meeting was held with the AMB to carry out a study on these specific events. During 2021, no exceedance of these values has been detected in the AMB's self-monitoring and inspections.

Environmental management and control
The products produced are 44% and 47% soybean meal, hulls (fibre) and crude soybean oil. These products are loaded in bulk on trucks or on ships.
The entry of the raw material, Soya Bean, into the plant is done through the unloading of PANAMAX ships that dock at the quay next to Cargill's facilities. This unloading is carried out by means of unloading machines and conveyors installed on the quay, and is stored in 8 concrete silos with a total capacity of 56,000 Tn.
The auxiliary materials needed in the production process are the following:
Boiler additives: They allow to control the quality of the water used to generate the steam needed in the process, avoiding corrosion in the equipment and improving the efficiency of the process.
Talc: It is added before the soybean meal is finished grinding to prevent it from caking. It is unloaded in a tanker truck and stored in a shallow tank.
Calcium carbonate: Product used for the soybean dust filtration system in the suction air filtration system of plant unloaders.
Hexane: Necessary for the extraction of the oil from the yellow flakes of the laminated soya beans. This solvent is supplied by tanker trucks and stored underground in the extraction building.
Lubricants and greases: Necessary for the lubrication of the moving parts of all plant equipment.
Phlegm Oil: Liquid absorber of hexane vapours in the filtration system of the extraction plant.
Form-Al D: Biocide used in the storage of soybean meal to prevent the occurrence of Salmonella.
Deptal: Cleaning agent used in the extraction plant for cleaning oily areas.
Salt: Used for the generation of decalcified water to feed the boiler.
Osmosis additives: products to improve the cleaning and control of the osmosis equipment in the boiler area.
Gasoil: Used to power the engines of the plant's fire fighting system and as fuel for the excavator shovels used in the cleaning and emptying of the PANAMAX ships' holds.

◉ Análisis, planificación y desempeño ambiental
The annual evaluation of environmental aspects and impacts is carried out in accordance with procedure PR-EHS-06 of the Cargill, S.L.U. management system for the Port of Barcelona. To this end, the activities carried out for each process are listed, identifying those environmental aspects that may occur. The identification is carried out on activities carried out under normal conditions, abnormal conditions and potential emergency situations.
They must be identified:
- Aspects
- Environmental Impacts
- Resource concerned
- Life cycle
The criteria used for the assessment of environmental aspects and impacts are:
- Outreach
- Probability
- Recoverability
- Gravity
- Regulations
- Quantification
- Legal Compliance
- Significance Assessment
- Control
On the other hand, possible emergency situations relating to the Environment, Health and Safety are identified and evaluated in the emergency plan of each of the Cargill, S.L.U. plants, taking into account:
- The identification and characterisation of emergencies, inside and outside the plant, related to all operations, processes, products and services of the plant, considering normal, abnormal and accidental operating conditions, as well as those caused by factors outside Cargill's own activity;
- Definition of the methodology and significance criteria used in the assessment of emergencies;
- Preparation of the Emergency Plan and crisis manual.
The main significant environmental aspects of Cargill S.L.U. can be seen below. All of them are direct, except for the emission of NOx, CO2 and CO from the ships' boilers, which is an indirect aspect.
- Generation of CO2, NOX emissions - Steam boiler: the boiler and 4 of the plant's rotary kilns are in the process of being replaced. With the expected improvement in energy efficiency and legal compliance with the emission parameters
- NOX, CO and CO2 emissions from raw material ships - Ship unloading/loading: working with the Environment working group on new initiatives for electrified docks to eliminate emissions from ships, as well as new international regulations that will reduce the impact of these emissions.
- Increased mineral oil waste - Maintenance and lubrication of equipment: Grease and oil consumption has increased due to the replacement of many pieces of equipment, and the malfunctioning of the 924 has increased the consumption of phlegm oil and waste generation.
- Increase in scrap waste - Maintenance and Projects: Reduced ratio compared to 2019, but increased above the environmental clearance limit due to projects carried out in 2019-2020, where a large amount of plant equipment has been changed, these changes have been communicated to the administration
- Increase of paper and cardboard waste - Maintenance and Engineering supplies: The segregation of cardboard waste has increased, mainly due to a new collection point in the workshop and improved communication of waste segregation. As a result of this, the amount of banal waste has also been reduced.
- Increase in fluorescent waste - Maintenance and Engineering: Several plant lighting fixtures that have not yet been replaced with LEDs have had to be replaced. The volume has increased compared to the previous year, although the authorised limit has not been exceeded.
- Increased segregation of domestic packaging waste - Waste segregation: The segregation of plastic waste (packaging assimilable to urban) has been increased, the number of collection containers has been doubled and they have been located in a more accessible point for all personnel accessing the plant. As a result, the amount of banal waste has also been reduced. We are working with the Emas Club to use the elevator belts for various circular economy projects.
- Exceeding of discharge water parameters - process water - Extraction: The specific generation of sulphides in the process water has still not been ascertained. A study is being carried out in this respect with the company Nalco. There have been regulatory non-compliances and meetings with the administration in this respect.
Environmental improvement planning
The improvement objectives implemented between the following dates are shown below. 2020 y 2021
The planned objectives are achieved, except for the targets relating to plant lighting (as the modification of light bulbs was completed in 2021) and the 5% increase in recoverable waste (in 2019, 98.62% of waste was of this type, so this was a very ambitious target).
This environmental statement does not include monetary information on investment in the environment and is made available to the various audit teams concerned.
This environmental statement shows the improvement in the performance of the activity, through the evolution of the indicators required by the European EMAS Regulation and the achievement of the audited objectives.
CARGILL S.L.U., at its work centre located at Muelle Álvarez de la Campa in the Port of Barcelona in the municipality of Barcelona, has environmental authorisation for the activity of extracting oilseed oils, with file number B1CS160151.
On 28 February 2019, a non-substantial change is requested (exp. B1CNS190156) due to the replacement of the desolventiser used in the process of obtaining soybean meal, causing occasional waste and reducing pollution to the environment (less consumption of heat energy and hexane, therefore VOC emissions were also reduced).
In order to continue improving the existing facilities and to reduce or prevent any possible impact on the environment, the company decided to replace the existing hexane tanks in the establishment, applying on 22 March 2019 for a non-substantial modification of the activity, with file number BNCNS190246 and a favourable resolution on 26 March 2019.
These changes are NOT considered as significant modifications of the activity, in accordance with the definition in art. 4 of Law 20/2009, of 4 December, and developed in art. 59 of the aforementioned Law; as well as in accordance with the criteria of substantiality established by the Generalitat. A report of changes is presented as a non-substantial modification, with file number B1CNS200072 and resolution B1CNS200072. file number B1CNS200072 and favourable resolution 29 March 2020.
During 2020, a number of changes were detected in some previously declared values related to waste generation and air emissions.
