Welcome to Monte Holiday Ecotourism
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our project, a dream that my parents had, and which they shared with the whole family, the authorities, customers, suppliers... and with everyone's help, that crazy dream came true.
In the heart of the Lozoya Valley, in the Sierra de Madrid, Monte Holiday is a life project, a space where disconnection, family leisure, and a deep respect for the environment come together.
Since our inception, our mission has been clear: to demonstrate that tourism and sustainability are not only compatible, but must go hand in hand. We live in a privileged environment, close to the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, and it is our responsibility to protect it because this special place must be enjoyed by future generations.
That is why we have adopted a pioneering regenerative tourism model in Europe.
Our commitment to the environment is reflected in every corner of our facilities:
- Renewable energy: Much of the complex runs on clean energy, thanks to an innovative hybrid system combining biomass and solar thermal energy, and part of the electrical energy.

The data shows a trend toward traditional camping and the occupation of pitches for longer stays. Although the volume of occupancy in accommodations has not experienced the same growth, overall activity reflects an increase in customer presence and more intensive use of facilities during peak seasons.
The campsite attracts different types of customers:
- Long-stay customers, whose numbers have increased over the past year.
- Passing customers camping, who have experienced the highest relative growth.
- Accommodation customers, whose occupancy has recovered but has not reached pre-2022 levels.
This diversity influences resource consumption, waste generation, and demand for environmental services.

Environmental management and control
The campsite continuously monitors energy consumption, especially fuels used in machinery and vehicles, such as gasoline and diesel. Although consumption has decreased in recent years, it continues to be considered a significant environmental issue due to the toxicity associated with its storage and the impact generated by its life cycle. The use of electric cars is encouraged and good mobility practices are applied, prioritizing travel on foot or by bicycle and providing information on public transport.
Evolution
The campsite's electricity consumption increased slightly in 2024, although consumption per visitor decreased thanks to efficiency improvements and the gradual renovation of facilities. The main opportunities for reduction are concentrated in the reception area, toilets, bar-restaurant, and lighting in common areas. Electricity is considered a significant environmental issue, and the organization maintains an active energy-saving policy based on continuous monitoring of consumption, replacement of equipment, and implementation of efficiency measures in buildings.
The change of electricity supplier from Eleia to Naturgy in 2024 has sought a more sustainable mix. In addition, technical improvements have been implemented that influence energy performance, such as replacing turbines with diffuser systems in the WWTP and soundproofing the machine room. A local purchasing approach has also been incorporated to reduce fossil fuel consumption associated with travel.
The campsite continues to consider the use of gasoline and diesel as significant environmental issues due to their toxicity and the impact associated with the life cycle of these fuels. Although consumption has decreased in recent years, measures to optimize their use have been reinforced by reorganizing internal travel, promoting the use of bicycles, and promoting digitization to reduce operational rounds. The goal is to continue reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improve the sustainability of daily operations.
In addition, the planned commissioning of a 99 kW photovoltaic plant in 2025 will enable us to reduce electricity consumption from the grid and associated emissions. This project is part of a broader energy digitization strategy (MH+Digital), which integrates the monitoring of biomass, solar thermal, the heating network, pumps, and thermal systems in the accommodations, adjusting their operation in real time according to needs.
Finally, the digitization of facilities, such as the monitoring of cold storage rooms, efficient air conditioning in bungalows, and smart management of pumping and treatment equipment, contribute to both efficiency and the reduction of unnecessary consumption and allow for better integration of future photovoltaic generation with the campground's actual consumption.
Renewable energies
The campsite has a centralized biomass boiler and solar systems for generating domestic hot water. By 2025, a 99 kW nominal power photovoltaic plant will be installed, consisting of 240 monocrystalline silicon modules connected to a three-phase inverter. The estimated annual production is 150,700 kWh, which would cover approximately a quarter of the campsite's electricity demand and significantly reduce its associated emissions.
The graphs show the evolution of annual electricity consumption and the relationship between MWh consumed and number of visitors. To monitor the energy efficiency of the biomass boiler, we take measurements every six months, including flue gas temperature, oxygen percentage, and carbon monoxide concentration.

The renewable share of the Eleia energy supplier for 2022 is 12.8%, for 2023 it is 15.8%, and for 2024 it is 21% in the first six months of consumption. For the last six months of 2024, the Naturgy energy supplier has a percentage of 43.9% of renewable energy supplied.

Environmental management and control
A significant portion of water consumption does not depend on campsite occupancy, but rather on the maintenance of vegetation and trees, which is necessary for fire protection and forest landscape conservation. These irrigation and maintenance tasks are carried out continuously as a preventive measure and contribute to the balance of the campsite's natural environment. The campsite systematically monitors consumption through regular meter readings. Efforts are being made to use water more efficiently while preserving the vegetation necessary for fire prevention. Among the measures implemented is the planting of species more adapted to the environmental conditions, thus reducing the need for irrigation and maintaining the stability of the landscape. Water consumption has increased moderately compared to the previous year, although this increase is not considered significant from an environmental point of view. The increase is mainly associated with a longer and drier summer. Even so, the campsite maintains a controlled consumption trend in line with annual occupancy. The different reading periods show a marked seasonal variation, with consumption peaks in the warmer months. This information allows us to identify usage patterns and adapt management, maintenance, and irrigation measures for gardens and common areas.

The purification system has undergone successive technical improvements: The biannual sampling is carried out by LABORED, a company accredited by the CHT. During 2024, three analyses were carried out, two of them during periods of high occupancy. All samples comply with the values established in discharge authorization No. 160.039/81TT/IN. The control parameters comply with applicable regulations and are verified through periodic measurements and analyses: The campsite continuously monitors the operation of the WWTP, adjusting oxygenation, pH, and organic load according to occupancy.

Environmental management and control
The campsite's atmospheric emissions come mainly from the biomass boiler and fuel consumption in machinery and vehicles. During 2024, half-yearly measurements were taken in the biomass boiler, including flue gas temperature, oxygen content, and carbon monoxide concentration. These measurements allow the performance of the installation to be evaluated and ensure that it operates within the established limits. Emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates are monitored. The organization monitors fuel consumption and promotes more sustainable mobility practices, such as the use of electric cars and walking or cycling. The combustion parameters of the biomass boiler are reviewed every six months in 2024 through analyses in July and December, analyzing, among other parameters, the temperature of the fumes, theirO2 content, and their CO and PPM particle content.

Waste from the maintenance of the activity
During 2024, the generation of fluorescent and lamp waste has skyrocketed. This waste is not so much associated with the number of visitors as with working hours, sunlight, and the life cycle of these lamps, since generation also increased in 2021. We are moving towards more efficient and environmentally friendly lighting.
Expired medicines are deposited at the Sigre collection point at the pharmacy in Gargantilla del Lozoya.
With regard to toner production, 5 kilos were generated in 2024, which is a significant amount. They are normally collected by Canon for reuse. When they are not collected by the supplier, they are collected by ATREVA.
Reception tasks have been almost entirely digitized, with online check-in, activity reservations, and tourist information being sent electronically. The area where printing is used most is in signage.
Contaminated packaging comes from various maintenance operations, and this year more contaminated packaging has been generated, with paint and wood treatment residues. The amount of contaminated rags produced continues to be practically negligible, as the simple maintenance tasks carried out do not involve the use of rags and, occasionally, paper rolls are used.
Waste from accommodation activities
Currently, waste collection at the campsite is carried out by the Sierra Norte de Madrid Association of Municipalities, which encompasses more than 40 municipalities in the north of the region, linked by the A-1 motorway.
This association is responsible for collecting and transporting all waste generated by households and businesses in the region.
The main waste collection services managed are: daily household waste, packaging, paper and cardboard, glass, vegetable waste, rubble, and bulky items.
There is no exact way of knowing the amount of municipal solid waste generated as a result of Monte Holiday's activity, as it is largely due to guest accommodation, for which it is difficult to predict the amount of waste that will be generated. For this reason, an estimate is made based on data on waste generation in the municipality of Gargantilla, which is urban in nature and attracts weekend visitors. The calculation is made in proportion to the number of visitors to the campsite. The data is collected from the Ecoembes website and is shown below.
The type of waste that is generated most in our establishment is packaging, as well as organic waste, although due to the type of stay, our customers do not cook as they would at home.
Glass comes from our customers and the campsite's catering service. Cardboard and paper have increased in recent years due to parcel services used by both our customers and our own business. Organic waste is estimated to account for 37% of the total generated per visitor (INE 2022).

Biodiversity indicators
In 2024, the built area remained unchanged from the previous year, totaling 4,446 m². Cabins have been installed among the trees, on platforms supported by pillars, thus avoiding damage to the trees and preserving the unsealed surface. The green spaces feature native flora, such as holm oaks, junipers, and wild roses, and plant species are planted annually in accordance with the type of soil and climatic conditions. The native fauna is preserved and you can see a large number of birds nesting within the campground. You can also hear the barking of roe deer. The variety of flowers and vegetation planted by customers provides bees, bumblebees, and other flying insects with a suitable habitat, thereby promoting pollination. It is important to note that the accommodations that were installed on the campground in previous years are elevated on pillars or mobile homes. They do not occupy any ground surface or sealed surface, as vegetation grows there and it is even used as a refuge for some animals.
To care for our farm and its biodiversity, we chip the plant waste from pruning for farm care and maintenance and fire prevention, and incorporate it into the natural environment by spreading it on the ground, where it becomes natural fertilizer. This promotes soil fertility and maintains its organic structure.

Description of the most important and significant environmental aspects
The assessment of the significance of direct environmental aspects under normal conditions is carried out based on objective parameters such as:
- V1: Toxicity or Nature of the aspect under consideration: Toxicity is assessed based on the damage that a substance may be capable of causing to a living being.

Each of the parameters indicated can take the values 1, 5, 10. With the values determined, the evaluation of the aspect is determined as the total sum of the values given to each of the defined parameters:
- VT = S Vi where i varies from 1 to n, n being the number of parameters applied to an environmental aspect.
Significant aspects are those that obtain a total score (VT) above half of the maximum value that the aspect would have if it received the maximum score in all concepts, i.e., 10 points: VT ≥ n x 10 / 2
The identification of indirect environmental aspects is evaluated together with direct environmental aspects, using the same tables with which we weigh normal aspects. The significant aspects resulting from the environmental aspects analysis are listed in the following table.
To assess the significance of potential aspects in each case, the same procedure is followed as when assessing the significance of normal aspects.
The assessment of the significance of direct environmental aspects in emergency situations is carried out based on the evaluation of the following parameters:
- V1: Probability of occurrence of the risk or emergency situation. Assessing the number of times an event has occurred in the area being evaluated.
- V2: Probability of affecting people.
- V3: Probability of environmental impact.
- V4: Stored products/Materials in the area under assessment. Assess the type of products, in general terms, both those stored in the area and the materials present, particularly if there is any increased risk or emergency situation in the area under assessment or any related environmental aspect.
- V5: Mitigation/containment/barrier measures. Assess whether or not measures have been adopted that can minimize a negative effect in the event of an incident.
- V6: Type of waste that may be generated depending on the event and type of area. Assess the potential hazard of the waste that could be generated by the occurrence of the event.
- V7: Type of emissions that may be generated depending on the event and type of area. Assesses the potential danger of emissions into the atmosphere that could be generated by the occurrence of the event.
- V8: Type of spills that may be generated depending on the event and type of area. Assesses the potential danger of spills that could be generated by the occurrence of the event.
Since the VTR, VTE, or VTV value is the sum of six addends, the maximum value will be 60 and the minimum value will be 6. A potential environmental aspect is considered significant when its VTR, VTE, or VTV is equal to or greater than half of the maximum value.
As indicated above, the values to be taken into account will result from the sum of those that are actually assessed, i.e., if a certain value does not apply to a certain risk or emergency situation in the file, it will be marked as NA (Not Applicable), and if instead of assessing 6, 5 is being assessed, the VT will be 50 and the value from which it will be significant is 25.
Only fire is identified as a significant direct potential hazard.
Description of significant environmental aspects
In terms of the use of natural resources, we consider electricity and diesel and/or gasoline consumption to be significant.
Contaminated packaging waste includes plastic and metal containers. Most of them have contained paint or wood preservatives. They do not always contain products that are likely to cause contamination, but we manage them as such. In 2024, 35 kg were recorded, and in the previous year, 23 kg.
Fluorescent waste has increased considerably; in 2024, 10 kilograms were produced, compared to only 4 kilograms in 2023. Fluorescent lights come from our facilities and are associated with the product's life cycle and hours of operation. The trend is for generation to increase in alternate years. In 2024, fluorescent lamps and vapor lamps are significant aspects and are managed by the authorized manager Atreva.
Toner cartridges come from administrative activities carried out at reception. The quantities produced are small.
Reducing electricity consumption is one of Monte Holiday's priority objectives due to the high environmental and economic costs involved. We remain committed to energy saving and the use of renewable energies. In 2024, total consumption increased by 13.5 MWh compared to the previous year. In terms of kWh per number of visitors, it decreased by 1.9%.

Best Environmental Management Practices
1. Environmental behavior and practices of contractors and subcontractors.
Subcontractors operating on the premises of CAMPING MONTE HOLIDAY are aware of the environmental requirements in order to:
- Minimize the consumption of water, energy, and raw materials, as well as waste, noise, and gas emissions, and damage to the ecosystem.
- Control of the generation and management of Hazardous waste Hazardous RP) and municipal solid waste (MSW) using the containers provided for this purpose.
Subcontractors that provide services directly related to environmental management—such as transporters and managers of Hazardous municipal waste—are authorized by the relevant authorities.
2. Management of purchases from suppliers and subcontractors.
- All products and equipment purchased by CAMPING MONTE HOLIDAY are acquired with the aim of minimizing the environmental impact that these products or services may have, seeking recyclable products with degradable packaging, sprays that do not contain CFCs, equipment that consumes less energy, is more efficient, and causes less noise. Purchases take into account the entire life cycle of the product, promoting the consumption of local, artisanal, and/or organic products, always in relation to budget and availability.
3. Check-in, billing, and registration are done online. Printing is usually done for signage and other internal uses.
4. In June 2025, the photovoltaic plant for self-consumption is expected to begin operating, reducing our consumption from the electricity grid.
5. Other improvements:
- Create a Good Practice Manual for CAMPING MONTE HOLIDAY employees to reduce energy consumption in areas where they have direct influence, such as reception.
- Improvements to infrastructure, installation of other renewable energy sources, centralized solar and biomass hybrid boiler to heat the bungalows, reception area, security guard's house, and restrooms.
