The Cumulative Environmental Improvement Index (CAEI)consists of the progressive sum of the percentages of improvement or worsening year after year and from a pre-established base year, for the following variables: raw materials, waste, water consumption, energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The corresponding graph is included below.

The Renewable Energy Index (REI)consists of the percentage of energy consumed from renewable energy. Either from the purchase or acquisition of certified renewable energy from the grid or from generation at the sites covered by the European EMAS Register.

The Circular Economy Index (IEC-RR)consists of is the averaged sum of the contributions (Ci) of the fractions of R-recycled and R-recovered materials involved in the products and services marketed or manufactured and in the services provided by the organizations. Its scope contemplates the acquisition of materials and goods (C1), their manufacturing processes (C2), containers and packaging (C3) and the potentially recyclable or reusable fractions at the end of their useful life (C4).

Includes the sum of all the organisation's sites under the EMAS Register.

Circular Economy Index of IEC-RR organization

 

The Reused & Recycled Circular Economy Indexconsists of the averaged sum of the contributions (Ci) of the fractions of R-recycled and R-recovered materials involved in the products and services marketed or manufactured and in the services provided by the organizations. Its scope includes the acquisition of materials and goods (C1), their manufacturing processes (C2), packaging (C3) and potentially recyclable or reusable fractions at the end of their useful life (C4). Its calculation is based on the following formula:

IEC-RR = ((C1.+C2*E2+C3*E3+C4*E4)/4) * Uf/Uf.s. * Lf/Lf.s..

The IEC-RR index can be corrected by the Utility factor or use or application of the product or service, as well as by the expected longevity factor for the product or service. The organization shall justify these values by presenting the corresponding accrediting studies. For this purpose, the functional unit and its mass ratio shall be defined.
RECYCLING AND MATERIAL RECOVERY FACTORS

  • C1. % of RR materials in materials purchased or acquired.
  • C2. % of RR materials in waste generated in manufacturing or service provision processes.
    E2. Efficiency factor (0 to 1) in the processes of waste managers/recovery of RR C2.
  • C3. of potentially Recyclable or Recoverable materials in final products delivered to B2B customers or end consumers. B2C (excluding packaging).
    E3. Efficiency factor (0 to 1) of the C3 RR process expected in the target region for the final product (it is recommended to take an average value).
  • C4. The percentage weight fraction of potentially Recyclable or Recoverable packaging delivered to the B2B customer or B2C final consumer.
    E4. efficiency factor (0 to 1) of the RR C4 process (it is recommended to take an average value).

  • Uf: functional units used for each unit of the marketed product.
  • Uf.s.: industry average functional units for an expected life of the product.
  • L: Expected longevity of the marketed product.
  • L.s...: Longevity or industry average life expectancy of the product.

 

 NOTES FOR THE CALCULATION OF VARIOUS PRODUCTS

  • C1 is a value obtained for the organization as a whole. It comes from the evaluation of raw materials and goods purchased by the organization.
  • C2 is a value obtained for the organisation as a whole. It comes from the data provided by the waste managers.
  • C3 and C4 are calculated based on the weighting of the circularity values of each product according to its mass ratio (mi) with respect to the total product marketed by the organisation (Mt). Where m/i is the mass of each product and Mt is the total mass. Example (Product i: A,B,...)

C3=(C3A * mA + C3B *mB)/Mt
C4=(C4A * mA + C4B *mB)/Mt

In the case of calculating the Circular Economy Index for several products, the factors of utility and longevity of products should be applied product by product before averaging the Ci contributions, as different products may have different values of these factors.
